How to Do SEO for Directories (From Expert)

Directories are great for organizing the web. You can list your website and get clicks for free. And it boosts your SEO efforts.

But how do you do SEO for a directory website?

This is what I am going to answer in this blog post ...

1. Pick a Niche

Don't create a directory about everything. You need to be clear about what you offer and how you can help.

For me I currently have 3 directories. One is an affiliate directory and the second is a PHP scripts directory, and the third is an advertisement space directory.

I have picked a niche for each directory. And I do not accept listings that are out of this niche.

2. Make It Easy

The internet is fast and you need to make everything easy about your directory. Make it easy to register and submit websites and track their progress.

More listings mean more business for you.

3. Make Listing Free

You should encourage users to submit more listings. This is why you need to make it free. You can add a small fee for fast review like other directories. But don't go crazy.

4. Create a Submission Rules Page

Users need to know about the website rules before they submit so you make sure that submissions are following the website guidelines.

If a user does not follow the rules make it harder for them to submit again so you don't get an inbox full of crappy websites.

5. Display Stats

You need to share stats of your listings and it needs to be good. If a listing gets 100 clicks last month users are more willing to submit their website.

You should at least include all times clicks and time since the listing was live. This will give the user an idea of how well your website is doing.
